ABSTRACT
The article is intended as a guide for libraries that are considering automation and for which the overdues process is an area of concern. Manual and automated overdues procedures are compared, and special features of automated systems (sorting by ZIP code, manual overrides) are examined. Minimum requirements for the automated handling of the overdues function are outlined. For example, such a system should be able to produce overdues notices in batch mode.
