ABSTRACT

The transport sector is one of the largest consumer sectors of oil in the world. Increasing energy efficiency and use of renewable energy, as well as decreasing oil consumption is crucial to combat climate change. These three objectives can be achieved by cleaner technologies as well as with non-technical solutions. In this context, policy measures in the form of incentives or disincentives and regulations can play a key role. Evidence from a number of European countries shows policy measures are win-win solutions in that they can also bring co-benefits like decreased congestion and improved well-being for societies. This chapter analyses some examples from the EU and the possibility of replicating these experiences in some developing countries.
