The process of weeding collections is by no means a recent phenomenon as it undoubtedly dates back to some of the earliest libraries. Many situations call for inauguration of a weeding project, such as lack of space, a desire to place materials in a more suitable library or changing goals of the library. Ideally a policy governs weeding, or deselection, as it is sometimes called.
