ABSTRACT

One of the greatest problems archaeologists face when their field work is the quantity of information that is yet to organize within the archaeological site being studied. Traditionally, most of this information would be registered by hand on paper. However, the last thirty years have allowed for the democratisation of computer systems and Geographic Information System (GIS) software, assuring a much more efficient and automated approach to information registration, querying and extraction. Therefore, we have employed GIS as a method of organising and formatting a great amount of work that has been executed in the archaeological project of “Arqueologia das Cidades de Beja”. The result of this work is a platform in which data that was previously indirectly correlated becomes conjugated in a digital singularity that allows for a simplified, fast and straightforward access and analysis of information without requiring a very large investment in training.
