ABSTRACT

This chapter offers an analysis of how the First and Second World Wars have been represented in popular game franchises Battlefield and Call of Duty. In this analysis the complexities, and indeed limitations, of developing and utilising ludic systems to explore the historical and moral complexities of war are considered. In so doing, it also assesses how we might understand historical eras as a set of stylistic or generic conventions, and how this can have subtle but profound influence on how we remember and reconstruct the past.
