ABSTRACT

The growth in the use of the Internet over the past several years has produced a corresponding growth in the number and types of illegitimate practices undertaken over the Internet. From the annoying, but relatively innocuous, invasion of spam emails to more insidious practices such as identity theft, online fraud, sales of counterfeit and/or unauthorized trademark misuse. Cyber-security is, in fact, the protection of Internet-connected systems, including hardware, software and data, from cyber attacks. E-safety therefore, means ensuring that users are protected from harm and supported to achieve the maximum benefit from new and developing technologies without risk to themselves or others. The aim of promoting e-safety is to protect young people from the adverse consequences of access or use of electronic media, from bullying to inappropriate sexualized behaviour or exploitation.
