ABSTRACT

Biopesticides are environmentally sensitive alternatives to the use of synthetic pesticides for the management of pests. The broadest definition of biopesticides includes the use of naturally occurring chemicals, pesticidal compounds produced from genetically engineered plants, and microbially based products. This latter group has shown considerable promise for the management of a wide range of target pests. Although they are often thought of as being analogous to synthetic pesticides, biopesticides (including their production, handling, application, and commercialization) need to be treated in an alternative paradigm.
