ABSTRACT

This chapter explores traditional residential buildings, which represent approximately 22% of the building stock, to establish the impact of these policy pressures. The types of buildings considered in this chapter range from the exemplar one-off or individual building to the mass-built solid-wall stock constructed as part of the industrialisation of the UK, often referred to as pre-1919 dwellings. The UK policy on energy efficiency considers national energy infrastructures and buildings as a whole. The chapter also explores through a series of case studies the benefits of careful evaluation of the retrofit design process through computer simulation methods at different scales: regional, community and building. The distribution of traditional buildings varies greatly between administrative areas, resulting in a range of challenges with distinct problems and solutions. The modelling of domestic energy consumption is an important tool to establish the benefits of energy efficient refurbishment.
