ABSTRACT

This chapter presents case studies that deliver performance upgrades, 'seen and unseen', to both built fabric and systems with differing degrees of visibility. The range of case studies here is not arranged to present a linear deduction: it aims to provoke an energetic diversification of approach. The four case studies are chosen to present a range of challenges: the thermal insulation of timber framed buildings, the external wall insulation of both terraced and individual houses, the use of renewables to re-cast the potential of a national estate, and finally examples of design used as a tool to modify behaviour. Timber-framed buildings have been recognised as some of the most challenging to upgrade without causing risk to their fabric, yet they can be exceptionally thermally inefficient. The jettied timber-framed building hugs the south side of its three-storey chimney stack.
