ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the correspondence between Sir Walter Scott and Maria Edgeworth, a letter from Maria Edgeworth to Honora Edgeworth dated July 31, 1823, and a letter to Mr. Ruxton dated August 9, 1823. Maria Edgeworth's first impression of Scott was, that he was neither so large, nor so heavy in appearance as I had been led to expect by description, prints, bust, and picture. Lady Scott was so exactly what Maria Edgeworth had heard her described. She must have been very handsome—French dark large eyes; civil and good-natured. Miss Edgeworth and her sisters spent a most happy fortnight with Sir Walter Scott and his family. Sir Walter delighted in Miss Sophy Edgeworth’s singing, especially of Moore’s Irish melodies. It was very agreeable to observe how many friends of long standing Scott has in his neighbourhood.
