ABSTRACT

No information about I. B. Johnson has survived: even his christian names are unknown. 3 It is not even clear how Godwin managed to make contact with him, although he obviously did so during the weeks following Wollstonecraft’s death when he began to compile information and make notes towards his projected Memoirs. Perhaps Wollstonecraft had spoken of him, and presumably his address was among her papers. All that is evident is that he was one of a number of young enthusiasts who made their way to Paris to witness the events of the Revolution at first hand.
