[‘Secession from the Church of Scotland’, Drafts]

Dove Cottage MSS 1989:161.2, 1989:161.3, 1989:161.5, 1989:161:6, 1989:161.7, 1989:161.8, 1989:161.9, 1989:161.16. These manuscript drafts for the essay, ‘Secession from the Church of Scotland’ (Blackwood’s, February 1844) were probably written between late November, 1843, and mid-January 1844. In a letter (12 December 1843), De Quincey acknowledges that he has received a pamphlet on from Robert Blackwood (12 December 1843; NLS MS 4065, ff. 210/11). This is probably the pamphlet by Dr Thomas Chalmer (1780–1847) mentioned at the beginning of DC MS 1989 161.9.
