ABSTRACT
The manuscript is in the Library of the University of Texas at Austin as MS At/ s N 2922. It consists of a single sheet of white paper written on both sides and headed in Japp’s hand ‘Cause of the Novel’s Decline’, a convenient title which is retained here although it is not De Quincey’s. Japp has also deleted the final paragraph and substituted a conclusion of his own (not given here). This adulterated version appears in PW I, pp. 300–1.
