The manuscript is held by Cumbria Record Office, Kendal (reference De Quincey MSS, WD/K/308) and consists of a single sheet, watermarked ‘J. W. Whatman 1819’ and folded to give two leaves 204 by 253 mm; writing, in black ink, fills all four pages. De Quincey has paginated the manuscript from ‘11’ to ‘14’. Two unknown hands have later renumbered the pages, first as 20–3 and then as 135–8. An inaccurate and incomplete version of the manuscript is published in Japp (1890) (pp. 161–5).
