These two manuscripts may or may not belong to draft material written for a single projected work. Their topics, however, seem sufficiently close, and sufficiently unusual, to suggest that they belong, however loosely, to what may be regarded as one project, namely an essay on the relations between agriculture and military resources in the Roman world, with some parallels drawn regarding the Britain of De Quincey’s day.
