ABSTRACT

The objective of Chapter 3 is to show six practical problems that are part of the day-to-day routine of organizations with productive systems that can be analyzed via utilization of the DEA technique. The first case study is realized at a bus manufacturing company that utilizes product modularity. This company needed to know if modularity was improving the productivity and efficiency of its operations. The second case study involves a road vehicle fleet management company, which was facing difficulty in measuring the performance of its service operations. The third case study describes a model of productivity and efficiency analysis for a fuel station network. The fourth case study analyzes the effect of investments made for technological upgrading of a petrochemical company’s manufacturing complex. The fifth case study evaluates the effects of investments to stimulate continuous improvement at an arms manufacturer. The sixth case analyzes the efficiency of a bus manufacturer’s production management. Chapter 10 shows how DEA can contribute to the analysis, management and solution of all these issues.
