ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how to redefine leadership as both individual and collective pursuit, one that can support collaborative practice and lead to transformative change for children and families. It also considers the importance of shared values and the need for open communication and transparent collective decision making. The chapter draws upon evidence from recent research articles and research conducted by the authors in 2014. Recent political changes (Brexit, austerity and changes in government leadership) have led to a shifting landscape within the early childhood sector, resulting in confusion around leadership roles. Douglass notes the lack of clearly defined pathways for leadership and opportunities for development within the early childhood sector at present. The Effective Leadership in the Early Years Sector study identified key variables in effective settings: contextual literacy, collaboration and improvement of children’s learning outcomes.
