ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to report transit safety conditions in bus/tricycle/motorcycle stops as experienced by college students in Lagos, Nigeria, with a focus on experiences of sexual transit crime. The study is based on answers from a small sample survey of tertiary students’ (270) valid responses on an internet-based questionnaire about safety in public transportation. Findings show that 61 percent of women and 55 percent of men always feel unsafe when using bus/keke napep (tricycle) or motorcycle stops at night. Verbal/physical threats, obscene sexual language, and unwanted sexual looks are the most common types of events experienced by the students. Improved conscious design of facilities, the internal design of vehicles, and the environments (routes) that public transports traverse, CCTV and lighting are recommended. The chapter ends with a discussion of the implications of the results for research and practice.
