ABSTRACT

Water scarcity is one of the major challenges faced by humanity nowadays due to climate changes, pollution of water resources, wastage of water, unscientific waste management, urbanization, expanding populations, etc. Recently the Kerala floods resulted in severe water scarcity in many places as all water sources were polluted after the floods. It is important to develop an efficient water purification system. The use of sand filter for removal of water purification has limitations associated with it. This can be tackled with introduction of pervious concrete for filtration purposes. In this project, a fly ash-bentonite pervious concrete filter is being designed. This is done by replacing the cement by an optimum percentage of both fly ash and calcium bentonite. Pervious concrete filters are casted for 20, 40 and 60% of fly ash and 5 and 10% of calcium bentonite. The optimum percentage of fly ash and bentonite were found based on the best water quality removal efficiency of different properties of treated water through pervious concrete filter.
