ABSTRACT

Human population is aging and hence the concerns about the aged need adequate attention. Demographic transition coupled with increasing life expectancy is leading to aging of the population across the World. Not significant priority is given to the aged people with regard to transportation. The main objective of this study is to find out the factors governing the older people mobility and transportation problem faced by the older people in the selected regions of Chennai city. Data collection was done by using a questionnaire-based survey and basic analysis was carried out by SPSS. The finding shows that religious and health care trip shares a high percentage of total trips. The main mode for mobility used by elder people is walking and bus transportation, when related to other modes since self-driving ability, is less. Residential area location of elder people is mostly influenced by work and religious purposes. Difficulties such as more walking distance to access the stations, the long waiting time for buses, unavailability of seats during peak hours and unaffordable fares makes transportation much worse for elder people.
