ABSTRACT

Pervious concrete (PC) is a special type of concrete with high porosity, that allows the passage of water through the voids. Currently PC is used in light traffic applications due to low mechanical properties. In this project, Micro Crystalline Cellulose (MCC) is used as a reinforcement to improve the properties of PC. MCC is a natural fiber, are renewable and sustainable. Thus, the project paves a way for utilization of natural resource for improving properties of PC. So, the environment friendly PC performance can be enhanced without affecting its environmental features by proper use of MCC. The PC mixtures were prepared by incorporating MCC at 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3% by weight of cement. The mechanical properties evaluated are compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength. The results showed that the mechanical properties are increased with addition of MCC up to 1.5% MCC. The compressive strength is increased by 1.8–10.46%, tensile strengths increased by 6.8 – 38.81% and the modulus of rupture ranged from 18.4 – 45.64%.
