ABSTRACT
In her novel, Die Brücke vom Goldenen Horn Emine Sevgi Özdamar describes the experience of a young Turkish immigrant in the Berlin of the 1960s when the first generation of foreign workers, so-called guest workers, came to Germany. Özdamar herself was an immigrant as a young woman and, like her protagonist in this novel, she did not know the language when she came to Germany. In spite of this, she writes in German and she has been awarded many important prizes, such as the Ingeborg-Bachmann-Preis, Heinrich-von-Kleist-Preis, and International Book of the Year by the London Times Literary Supplement.
