ABSTRACT

The exchange of marine science and technological information is essential for international cooperative research on ocean phenomena and optimal use of global ocean resources. At the present time nations both developed and developing are turning more and more to ocean research and the exploitation of ocean resources as part of their national effort to further their social and economic development, growth and well-being. The consequence of combined international use of this information will be an increase in the “knowledge base” on the world’s oceans; and, greater potential for the optimal use of ocean resources. Thus, exchange mechanisms are essential to the use of information and data in bridging of technological gaps between countries and strengthening of developing countries’ technological capabilities in the fields of marine science and technology.
