ABSTRACT

The Library of Congress Offices in New Delhi, Jakarta, Cairo, Nairobi, and Rio de Janeiro have for some years been publishing accessions lists of materials acquired for the Library of Congress and also, in the case of the first four offices mentioned, for a number of research librarians in the United States. Although the accessions lists are heavily used by area specialists they do not appear to be widely known to non-specialist reference librarians in those libraries which do not participate in the L.C. acquisition programs. In most libraries, requests for information about many of the countries covered by these accessions lists are probably not too common but reference specialists should be aware of these lists and the information they can provide. This discussion is intended to provide a brief overview of those accessions lists currently being published, their history, and the kinds of information they are able to provide.
