ABSTRACT

This paper explores the various ways in which the reference department head serves as a mentor to the beginning reference librarian. It does so through the analogy of the relationship of Athena-Mentor and the protege, Telemachus, in Homer’s Odyssey. In both cases, the mentor supports and guides the initiate, provides a role model to observe, coaches and tutors for competent performance, serves as an advocate and sponsor for the newcomer, and gives advise and counsel along the way. The department head is responsible for more than orientation to the institution and training in specific areas of responsibility. S/he ensures that the beginning librarian learns to apply the theory presented in library school to everyday practice, and thereby to define him/herself as a professional. An extensive list of additional resources is provided.
