ABSTRACT

Collection development efforts can often be enriched by cooperation with materials vendors. Libraries often lack the staff, time, or automated systems required to carry out collection development activities efficiently and effectively. Vendors are currently offering a number of generic and customized selection services. These services can be used by all types of libraries for a wide range of materials, including current publications, retrospective books, audio recordings and videos. They may be used for ongoing selection or for special projects. Various approaches are possible, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Libraries can profit from these methods if they are informed consumers, investigating the options and actively participating with the vendor in designing and using the service.
