ABSTRACT

SUMMARY. In December 1986, the Minneapolis Public Library Acquisitions Department began on-line operations using the Geac Library Information Systems Acquisitions module. Prior to this the Library had been using an IBM System 3 computer which provided a “semi-automated” batched operation. The major difficulties which the department needed to resolve were, (1) the shift of data entry responsibilities from EDP to Acquisitions, (2) the loss of traditional, hard-copy, files and reports and, (3) adjusting the work assignments of the Acquisitions Department staff. After one full year’s operation the Geac System is seen to be well designed but inflexible. The benefits of improved vendor response time, increased budget control and the ability for any selector to do direct data entry outweigh our inability to manipulate the software.
