ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the last part of the Old French Continuation of William of Tyre’s history, covering the years 1248-1277. As with so much else relating to the Latin East, this is a text that is frequently quarried for the information it has to offer but rarely considered as a piece of historical writing in its own right. Questions such as how, when, and where this section was composed and what the standpoint of the author or authors was have not attracted serious attention. The article discusses questions such as the sources, process, and dates of composition and the purpose of this narrative. Understanding such aspects of this work is essential for effective critical analysis of this text as an historical source.
