ABSTRACT

Libraries in the Nineties will be affected by the same forces affecting other segments of society, and many decisions will be driven by these considerations. Two such forces could have a large effect on technical services in particular. The first of these is the rapid development and deployment of information processing technology. The second major trend is the aging of the workforce, affecting libraries as well as other industries. These two trends will not act in isolation. They will meet and interact in technical services to produce a stressful climate of change with the potential for great gains or serious problems in productivity. With the appropriate understanding of the situation, and appropriate management of change, most of the pitfalls can be avoided, and all of the advantages can be claimed.
