ABSTRACT

This paper seeks to explore the impact that using microcomputer-based optical disc storage systems has on newspaper archival storage. An attempt is made to define methods that can be used to categorize the types of data found on the pages of newspapers, show how that information can be stored in a digital format, and determine the quantity of computer storage media required. The characteristics of the computer hardware, software, and storage structures are also examined. The paper also explores some ramifications of using existing technology to capture newspapers in machine-readable form, as well as some of the benefits and problems that may occur with use of the new technologies.
