ABSTRACT

Newspapers play a significant role in research in a number of fields, but because of problems in acquiring, storing and providing access to them, they are not as widely available as needed. In this paper the authors discuss the history of the newspaper collections at the Center for Research Libraries, the special problems in collecting and handling newspapers, the Center’s participation in the National Endowment for the Humanities’ U.S. Newspaper Program, and newspaper preservation. They point out that preservation efforts at CRL and elsewhere are not enough, and that much more must be done to assure the continued existence of these valuable resources.
