ABSTRACT

This chapter tackles the issue of loss during adolescence. It demonstrates how certain losses during this phase are expectable and growth-promoting while other losses are unexpected and traumatic. In addition, there are “invisible” losses during adolescence, for instance, those involving parental separation and illness of grandparents. What determines the outcome under trying circumstances is the availability of love, constancy, and support from parents and, when that is missing, well-attuned psychotherapy.
