ABSTRACT

Crisis in Galasi is a simulation of religious conflict in urban areas, conducted in six hours of play spread over four days of a conference on the topic. The simulation was intended to explore the sorts of issues that were likely to emerge in workshop discussions: the politics of religious mobilisation, ambiguous and contested historical narratives, the impact of changing media environments, cultural property protection, conflict mediation and resolution, the role of the international community, and, of course, the significance of urban space. This chapter discusses the purposes and design of the simulation, the simulation events and outcome, and how all this contributed to the broader analytical objectives of the project.
