Developing inclusion in a small-town food service

This chapter explores elements that have underpinned the sustainability of the ‘Homeless and Community Breakfast’ over a period of 15 years. Our understanding of inclusion has developed incrementally. People who attend the breakfast are invited to participate, and some become fully involved. We see inclusion as part of a culture that extends relationships across social boundaries not only at the breakfast but also in the streets of the town and on the beach. Addressing the challenges to this approach has engaged us around risk management and the goal of a shared view of volunteering at the breakfast as solidarity, not charity.
