ABSTRACT
This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part aims to introducing five international graduate students who are affiliated with State University’s Graduate Academic Success Program. It explains about how these graduate students negotiate their linguistic, cultural and disciplinary affiliations. These graduate students, like the undergraduates introduced earlier, are predominantly from China and other Asian countries. The part introduces their linguistic and educational backgrounds show the same diversity as that of the undergraduate students, but with a stronger emphasis on translinguality as connected to their disciplinary discourses. Yi-fen’s experience shows us how, in the translinguality that pervades his life, different languages serve different purposes, and it is their bringing together which might offer challenges. Linguistically-minoritized students are often asked to choose between educational success and making overt their plural linguistic identities.
