ABSTRACT

In the light of the steady rise in the labour force participation of married women over years, and their increased career commitment, it is clearly an area which is deserving of research attention. This chapter focuses on the interplay between a wife’s career and the geographical mobility of her household. The model therefore firstly assumes a childless dual career household in which both partners (A and B) are in professional employment. It should be noted that A and B are interchangeable with regard to their sex. As can be seen the majority of husbands’ job moves resulted in no observable changes in a respondent’s degree of participation in the labour force. However, slightly more than one in five of such moves were found to result in a negative change - that is, the respondent’s labour force participation decreased following the move.
