ABSTRACT

Entrepreneurs are recognized globally for their contribution to economic growth. Frequently, entrepreneurs within agribusiness industries are described as the “engines” of emerging economies as demonstrated by their innovations, job and wealth creation, usage of local or domestic resources, facilitation of industrialization and promotion of rural and urban development. This chapter will provide a conceptual understanding of entrepreneurship as a driver for agricultural transformation and economic development in Southern Africa as well as an overview of alternative capacity strengthening programmes for business development for small firms in emerging economies.
