ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. High levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, abdominal obesity, psychosocial factors, excessive consumption of alcohol and lack of regular physical activity are all considered as the principal risk factors for CVD. Furthermore, a strict relationship between insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables and CVD has been demonstrated.

This chapter discusses the beneficial effects of natural products in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It reports the data that demonstrates the efficacy of plants and/or foods or their constituents.from important meta-analyses and clinical studies rather than from mechanistic studies.
