Dan Flory considers the racial underpinnings of certain antipathetic representations of “disgusting” characters and sequences. In his provocative analyses of Birth of a Nation, Stagecoach, The Searchers, Within Our Gates, and 12 Years a Slave, Flory examines how representations of “raced” as well as racist characters intentionally mobilize disgust responses in their target audiences.
