Cross-cultural prospects for doctoral training in architecture

WithStanislaus Fung

Let’s not think about architectural theory in a PhD program abstractly but rather in terms of specific situations. In China, but elsewhere too, case studies are important because they are less abstract and can be used to develop theoretical understandings. However, when case studies are oversimplified, their value for researchers is often diminished. When we develop a rounded understanding of design thinking in case studies, theoretical ideas are more likely to gain traction. The range of case studies should speak to a synoptic view of our field so that they can play a part in articulating intellectual orientation. 1
