ABSTRACT

Selenium is an essential trace element for humans, and its physiological functions are mainly realized by selenoproteins. Thioredoxin reductase (TrxRs) is a family of selenoproteins that is widely expressed in organism cells from humans and consists of three members called TXNRD1, TXNRD2, and TXNRD3. Others have reported that TrxRs mainly exerts biological functions related to anti-oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory. Over expression or dysfunction of TrxRs can lead to various diseases. For example, TrxRs is overexpressed in multiple tumors, which can maintain the growth of cancer cells and affect the tumor phenotypes. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative steoarthropathy which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. The results of meta-analysis showed that there was no significant difference in the mRNA levels of TXNRD1, TXNRD2, and TXNRD3 between OA patients and normal controls, which may be related to a small sample size of the datasets.
