ABSTRACT

The basis of good health is connected to a well-functioning immune system. An overactive immune response as a consequence of immune dysfunction that results in a disease condition is called autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease is generally associated with factors such as genetics, infections, and/or environment causing a condition which is triggered by the immune system initiating an attack on self-molecules due to the deterioration of immunologic tolerance to auto reactive immune cells. Phytochemicals are good sources which can influence our response to drugs as many of them function as antioxidants, influence hormonal function, have antibacterial, antidiuretic, memory enhancing, adaptogenic property, anticancer, antiviral 428abilities with potential immunostimulating and immunomodulatory activity. This chapter is a study on the role of phytochemicals for the management and treatment of autoimmune diseases.
