ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the scope and impact of the Islamic microfinance sector in Pakistan in general, and the role of Akhuwat, a non-profit Islamic microfinance institution, as a key player in the sector in particular. The philosophy, objectives and operations of Akhuwat have been studied and elaborated on to understand the mechanism that puts it at a different tangent than conventional counterparts. By analysing its progress and outreach since its inception in 2001, it can be concluded that Akhuwat presents ‘new microcredit stories’; the impact it has created transcends beyond barriers of religion, geography and social class.
