ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a perspective of the animal rights movement with one of its foremost leaders, Gene Baur. We examine how humans have institutionalized farm animals and animal products as food, and the consequences of such philosophies and practices. We shed light on the process of social change used by Farm Sanctuary and its allies over 30 years. This work touches on ethical, economic, and spiritual perspectives of food production and consumption. We propose alternatives that citizen-consumers, as well as industry and government policymakers, could consider. We describe how values and practices such as mindfulness, conscious consumption, and collective advocacy can amplify and increase the allure of succulent plant-rich living. Baur provides perspectives on how to avoid causing unnecessary harm by making healthier and more compassionate food choices that are good for animals, people, and the planet.
