ABSTRACT

The expansion of tourism is one of the most often cited types of sustainable development. Western India appears to be a region where such sustainable tourism could be effectively employed to extend economic support. A unique range of structures and decorative features found there can form the basis for regional tourism. However, only a handful ever possessed the elaborate architectural structure and ornamentation which would enable them to be resources for tourism. Economic development through tourism is a policy filled with potential conflict for the physical and social environments of western India. Sustainable development in tourism strives to maintain and enhance a symbiotic relationship between tourism and environmental protection by maintaining and, wherever possible, enhancing the economic benefits of tourism without depleting the tourism resource. The most obvious beneficial impact of traditional tourism is as an impetus for economic development from foreign revenue infustion and local job creation.
