ABSTRACT

Bangalore, a cosmopolitan city located in Southern India, has emerged as the high technology center of India. Since 1991 the physical appearance of the city has changed drastically, resulting in the loss of much of the traditional character of Bangalore. Bangalore recorded a growth rate of 76% for the decade of 1980-90, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The historic core, or Bangalore City, began as the native area with its highly skilled artisans, bazaars, and wholesale and retail traders. Much of the architectural tradition of Bangalore will be remembered by what it inherited from the British and this was located mostly in the cantonment area. Bangalore has always been a very flexible city, ever willing to accept new people, new ideas, and new cultural traditions. While developed and western societies are trying to curb the automobile and its adverse effects on society, Bangalore seems to be embracing the automobile.
