ABSTRACT
This chapter contextualises and examines the meaning of lifelong learning in European universities. European universities are undergoing changes but to what extent has this impacted upon issues of widening access to students, particularly adults who have traditionally been excluded from higher education? Different conceptual understandings and interpretations of lifelong learning are explored in relation to adult education. Lifelong learning in universities is discussed by using examples from three European countries.
