ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores the connections between musical and social-emotional outcomes in El Sistema-inspired programs. It focuses on the need for higher education music programs to view and reimagine their programs as contexts for youth development. The book provides new perspectives on musical opportunities for “young people in challenging circumstances” during Human Development Through Music Stage 3. It describes how a Palestinian youth and young adult program offers safety, fulfillment, and a way to cope especially during times of conflict by connecting musical development with a sense of belonging, giving all adolescents and adults a musical voice in their own communities as well as the outside world. The book demonstrates how the ideals of Music Learning as Youth Development can thrive in the setting of the high school large ensemble culture that is prevalent in the US.
