Introduce Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Patients in intense distress are sometimes unable to continue with a clinical encounter. The distressed patient evokes worry, helplessness, frustration, and a sense of inadequacy in the clinician. This chapter describes the active relaxation technique of progressive muscle relaxation. Specific instructions help the clinician apply this technique during the encounter and later debrief with the patient. This technique not only calms the patient in the moment but also models effective emotional management.
