Prioritize Information You Need Right Now
Engaging patients in topics that feel uncomfortable is inevitable in clinical practice. When patients resist sharing sensitive personal information, it is helpful recognize that clinicians do not always need an answer to every question and instead can prioritize the information they need in that moment in order to provide appropriate clinical care. This chapter describes how to let the patient’s reactions guide you in focusing the interview on the most essential elements necessary to deliver care. Both patients and clinicians are susceptible to resisting discussion of certain topics.
